The Congress on Monday declared candidates for four more Lok Sabha seats in Punjab as it fielded state president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring from Ludhiana.
Three-time MLA from Gidderbaha in the Muktsar district, Warring has been pitted by the Congress against three-time MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, who quit the party in the run-up to polls and joined the BJP.
Dera Baba Nanak MLA and former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has been nominated as the candidate from Gurdaspur. Former Sangrur MP and former Punjab minister Vijay Inder Singla will contest from Anandpur Sahib while former MLA Kulbir Singh Zira will seek mandate from Khadoor Sahib.
With this, the Congress has announced candidates in 12 out of 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab. The party is yet to declare a candidate for the Ferozepur constituency.
Reacting to Warring’s candidature from Ludhiana, BJP candidate Bittu said: “From the very beginning, it was abundantly clear that Congress had no faith in Ludhiana’s local leadership. That is why now they have pitted an outsider in an important constituency like Ludhiana. All he would do is some morning walks in parks and reaching out to some bigwig industrialists. He would never be able to connect to the common masses of Ludhiana. It is a pity that the Congress could not find a local face for Ludhiana. They have already accepted their defeat.”
All seats in Punjab will go to polls in the seventh and final phase of Lok Sabha elections on June 1 and the results will be announced as part of the nationwide counting on June 4.
