The city centre felt alive as revellers in rainbow hats, scarves and t-shirts began filling the pubs and coffee shops way before the Pride Parade got underway at 1pm.

The different flags representing the various strands of the gay community and banners demanding justice was a reminder why Pride was founded in the first place - to fight inequality and banish the institutionalised stigma which had dogged one of the most vulnerable communities in society.

However, the emphasis is now placed on celebration and having a good time. And here are a selection of snaps showing off Pride at its most colorful and beautiful.

The official Pride event in Market Square began filling up after the parade but those who did not fork out money for tickets but still wanted to enjoy the day had plenty of options. The Old Still put on its annual Pride Party and The Wheatsheaf held a Pride 1980s disco.

Ravel Williamson, 35, from Wednesfield, never misses Pride in Wolverhampton.

He said: "Pride is my favourite day of the year. To see how it has grown over the years is amazing. I love the fact that city is really jumping all day and night. And it is not just the main Pride event, which I still think should be free but I suppose if it was there would not be half the acts and attractions there is today."

Local act Nate Ethan got the party started at 2.45pm and was followed by Bilston Operatic Company whose Priscilla Queen of the Desert set went down a storm. They were followed by Miss Sundi & Gina Tonic. Pussycat Doll Kimberley Wyatt and Queenz were set to keep the fun going into the night.
